SMD pick-and-place machines position surface-mount components onto solder paste deposits during SMT assembly. They handle parts such as chip resistors, capacitors and integrated circuits using feeders, pickup nozzles and programmed placement coordinates.
Vision alignment checks component position and orientation before placement. The equipment must also support the package sizes, component heights and board dimensions used in production. A machine suitable for a dense PCB with fine-pitch devices may need a different configuration from one intended for larger, less complex assemblies.
When assessing placement capacity, consider the complete job rather than nominal speed alone. Feeder loading, nozzle changes, component recognition and product changeovers influence actual throughput. Offline preparation and well-maintained component libraries can help reduce interruptions when switching between boards. Integration with stencil printing, reflow soldering and inspection should follow the required line workflow.
