Cleaning test and control systems help manufacturers evaluate whether a PCB cleaning process achieves the required result. They provide information beyond the appearance of the assembly, supporting decisions about residues, contamination and process consistency.
Different methods answer different questions. Ionic contamination measurements assess extractable ionic residues, while other tests can investigate specific contaminants or electrical behavior under defined conditions. The choice of method should follow the product requirement and the type of failure or process variation being investigated.
A useful control plan includes repeatable sample preparation, instrument checks and clear acceptance criteria. Comparing data before and after a process change can help identify whether cleaning chemistry, rinsing or drying needs attention. Results should be interpreted within the limits of the selected test, with additional analysis used when the cause remains unclear.
