Conformal coating protects suitable electronic assemblies with a thin layer of insulating material. It can help shield PCB surfaces from moisture and contaminants, depending on the coating chemistry, application quality and operating environment.
A complete coating process includes material selection, surface preparation, application, curing and inspection. Acrylic, silicone and other coating families differ in properties and processing requirements. Connectors, adjustment points and areas needed for electrical contact may require masking or programmed exclusion from the coating pattern.
Equipment selection should follow the assembly geometry and production volume. Manual application, selective coating and other methods offer different levels of control and throughput. Coating thickness, access beneath components and cure conditions need to be evaluated against the product specification. Cleaning requirements and repairability are also relevant when developing the process.
