Cleaning

Cleaning removes process residues and contaminants that can interfere with PCB reliability or subsequent manufacturing steps. In electronics production, this includes cleaning assembled boards, solder paste stencils and selected tooling. The method must suit both the residue and the surfaces being cleaned.

Flux chemistry, solder paste and assembly materials influence the choice of cleaning fluid and equipment. Components with restricted access, sensitive markings or trapped cavities may need additional consideration. Washing, rinsing and drying should be evaluated as a complete sequence rather than as separate tasks.

A cleaning process should also have a defined way of checking its results. Visual inspection can reveal obvious residue, while ionic contamination testing and other analytical methods address different aspects of cleanliness. Requirements vary between products, so inspection and test criteria should reflect the intended application.
